Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) is a vital tool for coordinating maritime and coastal activities, promoting sustainability, and balancing conservation with economic development. By harmonizing sectoral strategies and ensuring a participatory approach, MSP supports a thriving blue economy while safeguarding marine ecosystems and coastal communities.
In the Caribbean, tailored strategies are essential to managing the diverse characteristics of marine areas and ensuring the sustainable use of their resources. By providing clear zoning for different activities, MSP helps reduce user conflicts, enhance environmental protection, and support ecosystem restoration. It also strengthens climate resilience by integrating mitigation and adaptation measures while promoting sustainable economic growth through a balanced approach to development and conservation.
The PROCARIBE+ Project is actively advancing MSP initiatives in Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela and the Mesoamerican Reef Region (through a proposal for declaring parts of the reef as Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas), adapting strategies to each country’s unique marine environment to promote sustainable management and conservation.
